4 Tips for New Banjo Players?

Three things every new banjo player needs to know! If you’re just starting out on the banjo here are a few tips.
Don’t be cheap!
So you’ve made the decision to learn the banjo, now what. First you need a banjo. This is where you’re head will start spinning. There are so many banjo’s you can buy how do you know what’s best.
Usually, the heavier the better. Lightweight, tinny banjos are usually bad and I would suggest that you stay away from them. You’re looking for a good, solid, “full of tone” banjo.
Don’t skimp on the price.
Skimping on the price is a sure way to promote failure in your new venture. My brand recommendations are; Gibson, Huber, and Gibson. If you purchase one of these high quality banjos you won’t regret your decision.
Flimsy picks won’t cut it!
You will need stout, hardened metal fingerpicks. I always recommend the Propik. You can find them at fqms.com, elderly.com, etc… When it comes to thumb picks it really doesn’t matter. Just get what fits the best and make sure that it’s rigid and not flimsy.
Learn a tune, quickly.
Learning banjo songs is the best way to progress. If you just sit around and play licks then you’ll soon run out of inspiration and your fans will fizzle right out the door. Learn something simple like Cripple Creek or Boil them Cabbage Down.
Once you’ve got the song under your belt learn some alternate breaks and endings. Now you’ve really got something to throw at your bluegrass fans and wow them as the crowd gathers before your very eyes.
