Tablature

Hello, due to popular request I have created this page simply for tablature. We do not have tabs to every lesson. These tabs you see here are in PDF format.

I’m not a huge fan of tablature because I feel that it restricts the ability to learn by simply watching a good banjo player. If you can learn by listening and watching a banjo pickers fingers then you will learn far more licks in the long run. Tablature isn’t bad it’s just not my preferred way of teaching.

Learning by watching and listening is somewhat of a difficult skill to learn but once you’ve got it then you will be far ahead of the crowd. You’ll just have to trust me on this because it’s not the norm’ and most people haven’t mastered it therefore they will tell you that tablature is the only way.

I do post a few tabs from time to time on difficult pieces of music and they will be found here. So glad to have you on the site. Watch some of our video banjo lessons and let me know your thoughts. I want to make this the best site possible. Welcome aboard!

Thanks,
Ryan

any chance of tab for wreck of the old 97 please ryan

Ryan

Not at this time. We have not done that song as a lesson yet but it definitely has some good licks in it. Thanks, Ryan

Chris

I’m looking for Tabs and video instructions for “Foggy Mountain Special” Do you have that one?

Ryan

Randy thanks so much for the kind words. I’m glad that you are learning from the lessons and enjoying the licks. Don’t feel too bad, it’s pretty typical for folks to be pressed for time when it comes to practicing. As long as you enjoy it that’s what matters. I wish I had more time to play myself. Feel free to write anytime. Have a great week! Ryan

Randy

Hi Ryan,

I thank you for all the instructions your giving. I don’t have much time to practice. when I do practice I’ll look your sight up to learn a song that you have out or a special lick that I like. Thanks again.

Do you know a version of BANJO ROAD by Dick Weissman? One of the best songs I’ve ever heard on a banjo!

Ryan

Thanks for your involvement Kevin. I’m glad to have you hear. Great comments!

Mark

hi ryan i mark lambert have had some lessons over last 2years, but strugle with playing along with some onelse, i get lost. myformer teacher realy pushed this on me. iwas taught scruggs style creeple creek, banjo in hollow, but when i hear an see anyone else playing or tableture its played different, like creeple creek i was taught different. will slow me down in learning different styles?

Ryan

Absolutely! I have quite a few ideas for you. I tell you what, record one of your sessions and send it to me. I’ll put together a little lesson for you with my banjo along with your recording and give you some tips that you could use. Very cool thing that your doing at the prisons. Keep it up. I would like to hear more about what is happening and if the prisoners are enjoying the music. Thanks, Ryan

banjosammo

Ryan, my friend and I play hymns every week as volunteers at a local prison. I play banjo, my friend plays acoustic. We play any hymn with just chords. Roll patterns don’t work, so I have learned to constantly improvise to what sounds good with the timing. Do you have any tricks or simple, mid-song licks, that could replace my tradition chord improv. Thanks, Banjosammo.

joe

yea I can’t find any tab at all for a tenor other then a few lessons here and there how about a few tabs ahms-ahms for the needy lol

Ryan

Perry, I’m still working on getting the straps in stock. I’ll let you know when they arrive. Hopefully soon! You’re going to like them. Thanks so much, Ryan

perrydavis

I got two questions; 1 Where are the information on the straps you mentioned awhile back?? 2 Information on the strap you are wearing in the veidos??

perrydavis

Thanks….

Ryan

Good idea, we’ll put it on the to do list. I’ll post a simple version and a expert version. Thanks for the request.

perrydavis

Ryan I would like to see a tab of criple creeck that I could learn from.. Perry Davis..

Ryan

The numbers that you are seeing that might look like music notation are the numbers of frets for the particular note being fretted.

Jim Risner

thanks for the tab stuff i am a new (1 week) player and i dont have a clue what the tabs even mean is it fingers(#) or frets ?

Ryan

Sounds great! We’ll do it.

Ryan,
I’m a beginner and love your site. It would help me if you mentioned what tuning you’re using for your songs and licks. Unless I have a keyboard and can hammer out the tune, I don’t know how it should sound. So, just tell us you’re in “open G” or “double C” or whatever, and that would be great. Thanks!!

Ryan

Good Question. My recommendation for banjo tab would be banjohangout.org. They simply have a tone of it. Great site!

Ryan:I have been playing the guitar for a little over 1 year. I have found tabs through (guitar pro) which light-up numbers(frets) on the strings as the music plays. My father-in-law is practicing the banjo and I was wondering if there are any similar tab CD’s for banjo songs.
