Big Spike Hammer – Video Banjo Lesson

Here is one of my favorite tunes, Big Spike Hammer. This banjo lesson will only be available for FREE for a limited time. I’ve always enjoyed watching Ron Block pick this tune.

In this lesson you’ll learn a cool pull-off taking you from the “G” chord to an “E minor”. Then you’ll learn which not to add to lead you from the E to a C. This is a fun lesson. Be prepared to learn a hard driving banjo break.

Watch closely and you’ll learn some powerful banjo playing secrets, like how to bend the 4th string to add flavor to your break.

Shucking the Corn! Here’s an in depth video of how to play the “A” part of Shucking the Corn on the Banjo. I play the song up to speed first and then break down the licks at a slower pace.

Shucking the Corn has been one of my favorite tunes since the very beginning. I can recall playing it many times for family sitting around at Christmas time. Everybody always enjoys the great up-tempo tune. Have fun with it and remember to add a lick or two of your own in there.

This is the ultra-beginner version of Bile Them Cabbage Down. Seth (a premium member) requested this video, so this ones for you :)

In this banjo lesson I’ll walk you through how to play this great tune in just a few easy steps. You’ll want to first grasp the melody which we’ll cover in the first part of the vid and then progress with the forward roll.

“Shady Grove” Here it is! Bob R, one of our members, asked for this lesson. He requested to have a simplified beginner style lesson of Shady Grove and an Expert level, so here is the beginner lesson to Shady Grove.

I kept it simple and outlined the melody. You’ll find that we use the alternating roll alot in the beginner’s edition of this banjo lesson. I’ll be adding the Expert level lesson soon!

Don’t have “D” Tuners? Here’s a little trick!

I don’t have “D” tuners either but here’s a little trick that you can use to play Earl’s Breakdown. We all like the lessons that show us a trick or shortcut when playing the banjo. This is a cool one! In this video I’ll show you how to get that cool bending sound out of your banjo without touching a tuner!

p.s. If you already have “D” tuners then you can skip this lesson if you want, however this banjo lesson does contain a skill that will make you sound like a pro. Enjoy!

Cripple Creek Backup Video!

Ok, this lesson is a bit different. I’m going to play through Cripple Creek once on the banjo and then play through once on the guitar. This will give you the opportunity to hear yourself play this tune with a guitar.

If you’ve been a little nervous about going out to your first jam then you will gain a lot from this video. Try it a few times and let me know what you think. Try it with headphones on and without. It might make a big difference.
