GOT BANJO

Ryan, just a quick question about my banjo.
When I try to fret the 3rd string on the 3rd fret, I get a buzzing/muted sound.
I checked my finger & hand position to make sure I was fretting right, and I was, so I asked this man at my church who a lot about banjos, to watch me & see if I was fretting right. He said I was. But I still get that sound, & it is making me mad because I can’t play some of my favorate songs if they use that fret/string. My banjo is older than 40 years old, & I don’t know what brand it is since there is no name anywhere on it. Could it be the age that is making it do that?
Also, I can’t play standing up, because my banjo likes to flop over(towards the ground) & the neck is to far out away from my body to fret comfortably.
What do you suggest I do?
